Wakt aa gaya? Phir se? :) | Unplanned Decade 2010-2020

 

I wonder why I did not write for this blog in the last ten odd years (give or take a few months). I am looking for reasons to impress, but there are only the regular, mundane, ‘what happens in entrepreneurship’ kind of reasons. Pata hi nahi chala yaar…dus saal ho gaye? Type.

In this time however, much has happened.

(Picture from our first company offsite. None of the people in the picture work directly with me now, other than Amit Vishnoi, who heads and largely owns Jingles India. ( www.Jingles.co.in )  Some in the picture are still friends. Some , like Diwas and Vikram, who eventually became partners, fell out with me and had to exit. Others moved on in life to either become their better selves, like Gauri, who is now a leading Animal Rights activist and policy advocate, some others got married and 'settled' or simply moved on. Ranju and I are now separated and have decided to move on from each other. )

I am not new to Dehradun anymore, even as a returnee. The charm of 'I left a large city and corporate' does not excite me anymore.

I now know, that as a passionate person, one can only try and walk in the direction of one’s dreams, and even the best laid plans will fall apart occasionally.

The people one journeys with, will eventually decide the pace at which one will walk, as also how enjoyable the journey shall be. Both are important, but one will not remember the pace, only who one was with and what did one do that is memorable.

There will always be fellow travellers who shall outgrow the journey one is on...These include relationships one thought would last a lifetime; and new ones will appear on the same path. 

That the joy is still in being able to get up everyday with a sense of purpose and in continuing to walk. To say:

“Wakt Aa Gaya Ki Zindagi Pe Gaur Kiya Jaaye,

Sab Kuch Toh Kar Chuke Hain, Ab Kuch Aur Kiya Jaaye…”

Small towns ,breathe easy.

This time when I went to DehraDun, I felt different. The biggest reason was that I wasn’t thinking of my work back in Delhi and taking calls or looking at the Blackberry. I had quit my job and was relieved quickly and (though I hated the silence), I suddenly realized how important this small town was to me. A month before this visit I had paid thirty two thousand rupees for a ‘4 day, 3 night’ package at Kanatal and gone back a happy man. The Making of Audio Wagon (Aug 2008- August 13, 2009)

“You must be joking!” “Are you really serious?” “You’ll soon get over it.” I was expecting people around me to say this and similar stuff when I declared that I don’t want to work for a company (read another person) anymore, even when a respected training organisation gave me an offer and stock options. But the voices were all mine. The doubts personal and the feeling real. When I left my last role as the HR head of a group, I knew I was different. I felt different and unlike other times in the past when I would worry about my future, this time I felt absolutely confident. “I am never going to work for another man again” (or women for that matter). I don’t usually use swear words, but this had to be; maybe the most appropriate response from a guilty and absolutely angry man. I was guilty because, whilst like every Indian, I was furious and angry at what happened on 26 th November in Bombay , I almost forgot about it just a year later. Forgot not the incident; as a matter of history, but the anger I had felt. This morning I received the latest ‘India Today’ with the Bombay Terror attacks as the cover story. It spoke about the renovations at the ‘Taj’, the new equipment provided to the police force, the coordination between our security forces, as also the yet up-paid dues to the victims. I felt both ashamed and angry at myself. Ashamed, because I have gotten so used to people across the country being killed, that I can’t sustain the anger over any one incident, and angry because I really want to now.
